How to Keep Your Springer Spaniel’s Ears Clean

Given their size, Springer Spaniel ears are prone to problems, so it is essential that you take good care of them which, in turn, will help you keep your Springer Spaniel healthy and happy.

Make sure to check your ears every few days. Lift your ears and take a look inside. If they look dirty and brown and / or have a musty smell, then it’s time to clean them.

In my opinion, the ideal time to clean your Spaniel’s ears is just before going out for a walk. This is because when you clean your dog’s ears, a shake of the head will follow. Cleaning your dog’s ears before going for a walk will ensure that all head movements are done outside of your home!

You can get cleaning fluid / oils to clean your spaniel’s ears from your vet. One important tip is to make sure you have a stock of this at home, so make sure that when you visit the vet, you have stocked the ear cleaning solutions they provide. Alternatively, I have also used olive oil, as it can help keep your spaniel’s ears clean.

How to clean a Springer Spaniel’s ears

Just before you walk, make sure the family is ready and then go out with your spaniel. Once you are out of the house, administer the cleansing treatment to one ear. Then, hold the base of the ear canal between your thumb and forefinger and massage the liquid.

Holding the ear next to your head, turn your head to administer the cleansing liquid to the other ear and repeat the process.

Then, take a cotton ball and clean the dirt that you have released with this process. Don’t be afraid to poke it directly into his ear to clean it, his ears are quite robust and your Spaniel will actually like it!

Your Springer Spaniel will now go on a wobbly-eared spree, spraying what’s left of the treat all over the place. Don’t worry, your Spaniel is fine, just wondering what the heck was in his ears. However, this is the reason why I suggest you do the treatment outdoors. By looking inside the ear now, you need to reduce the amount of dirt.

Complete ear cleaning, now you can take her for a long walk where she will shake a lot more. When you come home give it a bath.

To help keep your Spaniel’s ears clean, you should also make sure that your Springer Spaniel’s ear hair is trimmed at the entrance to the ear canal.
