Motorola has set the bar very high with the launch of the Motorola Xoom tablet. It has the ability to give Apple’s iPad some tough competition. Being the first tablet to run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which is an operating system specially designed for tablets, it has surely become our favourite. We loved the highly customizable widgets and extensive intuitive notification scheme. With a gorgeous screen, a dual core processor and Android 3.0 Honeycomb, you’ve surely hit all the high notes. Does it really comply or is it just a mere exaggeration? Let’s find out.

The Xoom has a 10.1-inch screen, which is slightly more than the iPad’s 9.8-inch screen. While the Xoom is designed for landscape views, the Apple iPad is better in portrait view. Its creators have done everything possible to make it stand out from the rest of the tablets on the market, making slight differences that work both for and against. The titanium back plate is quite impressive and adds a touch of elegance to its appearance. The USB and HDMI port are present at the bottom and the top houses a headphone jack along with a Micro SD and SIM card slot. The power button along with the speakers sit on the back. Xoom stands apart from other Android devices in design as it lacks buttons on the front. One thing that could have been better in its design is that the rear camera lens is slightly away from the body, which increases the chances of it getting scratched easily.

First things first, it’s powered by a dual-core Tegra 2 processor and has various widgets for email, Twitter and other applications. We are very impressed with its fast web browser and some features like Google Map5 which also allows 3D maps. A 5 MP camera with dual LED flash is another desirable feature. The screen is capacitive, although we’re a bit disappointed that it didn’t turn out to be as responsive as we’d hoped. For a portable device, the stereo speakers aren’t bad at all, but they face the opposite side of the device, so sound quality is a bit compromised. It supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. You can also connect it to your TV via the HDMI port.

Honeycomb acts quite similar to Froyo, which is Android 2.2. The difference with mobile Android is that Honeycomb makes it easy for its users to copy shortcuts to a single home screen. It also promises impressive 3D and scaling effects while operating multiple programs. Some users will definitely find it very intriguing due to the availability of numerous options and the flexibility it offers, while others will find it difficult to use due to its increased complexity.
