Six Things to Consider Before Buying Pet Finches

1. Ownership of finches

Are you ready to have finches as pets? Finches are known for their ease of care and can make resourceful pets for just about anyone, including apartment dwellers, those with children, and even those with other pets. That being said, you need to make sure that other family members are actually ready to have finches in the house, can they be considerate and careful around the finches, can you keep your current pets under control around the finches, do you have a suitable place for his cage etc.

2. Varieties of finches

What variety of finches should I get? These active little birds are colorful, have varied patterns and personalities. They come in many popular varieties, including Zebra Finch, Gouldian Finch, and Society Finch. Ask your local bird vendor for their opinion and recommendations.

3. Keep finches

The fact that finches are very friendly birds allows you to keep them with other of these tiny birds or even with other hard-billed birds if you have enough cage space.

Because larger bird species can exhibit aggressive behavior towards smaller bird species, it is not a good idea to keep finches with hook-billed birds such as parakeets and lovebirds, as these birds have a more belligerent nature. To prevent feather pinching, don’t keep too many of these little birds in your cage.

Finches are normally social birds, but when grouped with other types of birds, there can be aggressive behavior between them. While some bird species, such as parrots, can sulk when unable to interact with their owners, these little birds are different in that they are highly social and will be only too happy to play with each other when left alone.

4. Taming finches

Because these tiny birds are so gregarious with each other, they probably won’t become tame enough to perch on your finger. However, there are some owners who have successfully tamed their finger finches, given enough time and patience. Most fins will not be easily manipulated.

When you need to handle your pet bird for activities like nail clipping, the best way to hold your bird is to grab it from behind and place your thumb and forefinger on opposite sides of its head. It is rare for a finch to try to bite and even then its bite is not harmful or very dangerous.

5. Caring for finches

Although most finches are very easy to care for, you should make sure they have enough space in their cage because they are very active. It is important that they can fly from one perch to another, so keep their cage accessories to a minimum to give them room to move freely.

All they need is a single toy, a mirror and a couple of branches or perches that can be changed periodically inside the cage to provide the birds with diversity. Toys that are advertised as safe for budgies are also very good for the fins.

You should let your finches bathe at least twice a week by placing a birdbath in the cage. This gives your birds something else to enjoy. Wild finches bathe by rolling around in dewy grass, so you can simulate this by having your bird bathe in wet dandelion leaves or wet grass and placing it on the cage floor for a couple of hours.

6. Enjoying your finches

Other bird species can be more boisterous and noisy, but these hardy little birds can still be highly entertaining. Another advantage of having these little birds is that they can be less expensive to buy compared to buying parrots and other soft-billed birds.

Rest assured, your finches will provide hours of fun with their individual dispositions, charming voices, and playful interaction.
