Surigao Del Sur’s Top 3 Hidden Gems

I was born in Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Philippines. It is located in the eastern part of Mindanao. It is known for the dusty and poor roads. I never thought I would get better in my life! But it was not until two years ago, when the construction of the Surigao del Sur highway began.

On August 5, 2010 I had the opportunity to spend a week on vacation with my family and the whole clan for our first big reunion. I couldn’t believe that what was once considered a road to nowhere is now a first class road, well built and maintained. It not only improves business and trade, but also opens up the hidden treasures of the province to the whole world.

White Beach of Britannia Island, St. Augustine

Composed of 20 or more islands and islets, it features fine white sands and blue waters. In sunny weather, the contrast of the white sands and blue to dark blue water is an impressive sight. The silica in the sand sparkles like tiny diamonds under your feet. Walking barefoot on the beach is a walk in the spa that relaxes tired feet. Swimming in the clear water is a refreshing experience and the cool breeze from the Pacific soothes your mind while adding to a unique encounter with nature.

Enchanted river in Hinatuan

Hidden in the thick vegetation of Hinatuan, there is a river that seems to originate from the mountainside. From the view from the top, cold water rose from the bottomless underwater cavern to the pool-like basin that empties into the sea. The short swim through the basin energizes your body. Shoals of different types of fish are a magnificent sight at feeding time.

Tinuyan Falls in the city of Bislig

Billed as the Niagara Falls of the Philippines, these majestic 3-tiered waterfalls are nature at its best. Bamboo rafts will take you to the bottom of the 55-meter falls for a cool swim. You may experience a sensation similar to a relaxing massage when the water touches your body. Exotic ferns and orchids can also be seen on both sides of the falls. A rainbow over the waterfalls in the morning is a splendid sight.

I once cursed our leaders for our wicked ways. But that changed now! Now I am proud of my province and I will definitely shout to the whole world that Surigao del Sur is truly a paradise worth exploring!
