The importance of proper pit bull training is relatively obvious. But, contrary to what many believe, it is neither more nor less important than training any other breed of dog.

Pit bulls are extremely intelligent and are very eager to please. Usually this makes your training easier than expected. Especially if this training starts at a young age. (It would be wise to keep the old saying in mind, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’).

If the puppy in question lives in a home with other animals or young children, proper training will help ensure that everyone lives in harmony, with little chance of altercations.

Young dogs, regardless of breed, are more tolerant of interruptions in their day. Growing up with these children or other pets will be easy for them. Older dogs, on the other hand, generally settle down on their paths and are more difficult to retrain.

Pit bulls that are vicious and uncooperative were bred to be this way, by indifferent owners who obtain them for illegal purposes. These dogs are not, nor have they ever been born, vicious.

Proper training doesn’t have to be a very dreaded task. It is not something that needs to be done for hours. Because pit bulls have such a high level of intelligence, they learn very quickly.

Many coaches recommend several short sessions per day rather than one longer. Five to 20 minute sessions are ideal; especially they can be incorporated into the dog’s normal schedule. Total training time of approximately 45 to 60 minutes should be adequate.

Actually, every time an owner interacts with the dog … a training session can take place. Training of this type teaches the pitbull to respond to the voice in general, not just a spoken command.

Utilizing some type of reward system works wonders when training any breed of dog. Offering a small treat, after a successful response, will go a long way in teaching the dog that he will be rewarded for a job well done.

As training progresses, both the owner and the dog will become more comfortable with each other. This will make pitbull training even easier.
