What not to eat if you have frequent heartburn

People looking to experience heartburn relief will often need to modify their diets in the process. In some cases, people experience chronic heartburn as a result of an underlying condition that can only be treated through direct medical intervention. In other cases, people’s diets and lifestyles predispose them to experiencing repeated episodes of heartburn.

Much of the food that characterizes the modern Western diet is extremely acidic, which is one of the many reasons why so many people in this part of the world experience chronic heartburn on a regular basis. While these people may experience short-term relief from heartburn by taking antacids during heartburn episodes, they can potentially eliminate that heartburn entirely by modifying their diets and avoiding certain foods.

Many people experience chronic heartburn in part due to regular consumption of tea and coffee. The modern business-oriented lifestyle encourages people to skip sleep, and they often make up for it by consuming lots of caffeinated beverages. Unfortunately, coffee and tea are inherently acidic, which is why many people get heartburn after drinking them straight.

Many people also drink coffee and tea at relatively high temperatures, which will only further irritate the esophagus and increase a person’s heartburn problems. Many people drink tea and coffee throughout the day, which will only make the problem worse. The frequency with which people consume these acidic drinks makes it even more difficult to relieve heartburn. Carbonated drinks, especially sodas, are going to have exactly the same problems in terms of acidity. People also tend to drink these types of drinks throughout the day, so they are going to ingest this type of acid at an accelerated rate.

People in the West often eat diets that are extremely high in fat. Eating meat products, dairy products, and high-fat desserts is an almost daily experience for many people. Many people more or less eat nothing else. Cutting these items out of the diet, or at least eating less of them, may be the first step toward heartburn relief for people in the West.

Unfortunately, people who are trying to avoid heartburn may also have to eliminate some healthy and delicious foods from their diets. Many fruits and vegetables are acidic, for example. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, and most other fruits and vegetables that taste sour will be acidic, which means they could trigger or worsen heartburn symptoms. People who substitute less acidic fruits and vegetables for these items will be more likely to experience relief from heartburn. People who try to eat more carefully will likely make more nutritious choices in the process, but they will also manage to relieve their heartburn.
