Although generally not life-threatening, yeast infection can be quite uncomfortable with the white cheese discharge, incessant itching, and accompanying burning sensation in the vagina. There are many over-the-counter medications available on the market today. Generics are safe to use and there are some that only need one dose to fully eliminate the yeast infection.

Aside from suppositories and vaginal creams, are there any home remedies for the infection? If the infection is just starting, home remedies might have a chance to stop the infection.

Modify your diet Stop eating foods rich in sugar and yeast. Refrain from consuming alcohol in the meantime. The fungus thrives on these foods and drinks, so do not “feed” the fungus. It will not make you feel miserable to abstain from these foods for a few days or until the infection clears. However, if the yeast infection is recurrent, it is best to make the diet change permanent.

Wear loose clothing – The fungus dies in contact with oxygen as it “kills” the yeast. Wear loose clothing or better yet, don’t wear underwear and “air out” your vagina. If you can’t afford to go “commando,” be sure to refrain from wearing tight pants until the infection clears.

Drink cranberry juice – to equalize the pH level in the vagina. Drink fresh cranberry juice instead of the sweetened concentrated variety. The juice could help flush the yeast out of your system.

Use yogurt – for vaginal suppository. Apply plain yogurt to a tampon and insert it into your vagina. It would be better to cool the tampon first by refrigerating it a bit. Yogurt could fix the pH balance in the vagina and may actually help control the itching and burning sensation in the vagina.

These methods may help relieve yeast symptoms, but they don’t really get to the bottom of what is causing the infection.
