Children these days are less interested in reading and watching the news. All they care about is their video games and mobile phones through which they can chat and play and do nothing else. It doesn’t hurt them when they’re kids, but it’s not good for their future. By the time they reach adulthood, they lack the ability to read current affairs resulting in spawning a sleepy nation.
It creates pressure on you as a parent because it becomes your responsibility to develop his interest in watching and reading the news. To help you with this task, I have come up with some unique ideas which are discussed below.
Before I go any further, let me tell you that it is not about playing outside and only indoor activities can help you with this task. However, you can do the activities below outside, such as under a shade structure, if you wish.
1. Play geographic and political games
Games are a fun way to learn. Effective games, such as the World Peace Game, challenge you to meet political goals to keep the peace in the world. This game makes them aware of what is happening in which country and how the problems will be solved.
2. Use the world map
The world map hanging in your living room or bedroom can do more than just decorate. It can serve as a tool to better understand world events. When listening to the news, ask your children to highlight the regions mentioned in the clip. This will help them analyze how far the country is from them where a problem is occurring and will help them to visualize it geographically.
3. Make your own podcast
Listen to entertaining news while doing housework with your kids. Then create a podcast about the event you heard with your kids. In doing so, the children investigate more about the event they are covering and use their understanding. This helps them develop journalistic skills as well as make them aware of the world.
4. Discuss the news
Have heated discussions about current events and involve your whole family in them. For example, you can highlight the theme of “Irma” that recently arrived in Florida. Take your children’s opinion about it and ask them what can be done to improve the situation.
If they don’t know about the event yet, they will definitely google it on their mobile phones to avoid embarrassment. As a result, some other important news will also catch your attention. This makes them active in learning about what is happening in the world.
5. Tell stories
While general speaking at home, sometimes it’s nice to tell some historical stories. For example, a few days ago I told the story of Princess Diana to my children and they asked me a lot of related questions. In doing so, I realized that they were aware of the British monarchy, which in turn helped them learn about British history, culture, art, and different aspects of British life back then.
