Step-by-step guide to teaching your chinchilla tricks

Chinchillas may look cute, but they don’t need a lot of care and attention once you bring them home. If you don’t keep your pet entertained even when he’s caged, he can quickly become bored and unhappy. So if you’re up for it, it’s worth spending some time teaching him a few chinchilla tricks that will keep him entertained while he’s in his cage or when he’s allowed to roam.

By teaching them things, you can help prevent your chinchilla from becoming a destructive pet. The best way to do this is by providing him with toys that he can spend hours chewing and playing with. Be sure to avoid plastic types as they may contain chemicals that could be detrimental to your pet’s health.

Another thing worth considering is buying not just one chinchilla, but two. Not only do they have someone to play with, but they will help each other keep their coats in good shape. To avoid the tapping of little chinchilla feet, it is best to buy two females. But keep in mind that there may be times when your pets are not alone, so provide them with a separate space if necessary.

After you bring your chinchilla home, give it time to settle down before trying to teach it a trick. During the first weeks it is much better if you allow yours to get used to its new environment and new owner. A chinchilla that is happy will trust you more and will respond more willingly to what you are trying to teach it to do.

Once they have settled in, now is the time to start teaching them some tricks. The first thing you should try to teach them is that they come to you when you call their name. Here are some tips on how to achieve this.

Step 1 – Begin by saying your chinchilla’s name, and then each time they respond by turning to you or looking at you, give them a treat (raisins). You need to do this twice a day for about a week.

Step 2 – Next, you need to call your chinchilla by its name again, but this time you need to hold the treat about 5cm away. Then give them to them in case they approach you after you’ve called their name. Again, practice this twice a day for a week.

Step 3 – We are now in week three and this time while calling your chinchilla, hold the grape 10cm away from her. But instead of repeating this twice a day for a week, you should do it for 2 weeks. Hopefully, by the end of this time, your chinchilla should be coming to you without the need for treats just by calling its name.

When it comes to teaching your pet new chinchilla tricks, make sure you don’t give them treats at any other time. Also, take the time to teach them each new trick just as you did when teaching them to respond when their name is called.
