You just wouldn’t believe it. Word has gotten out that some people are actually using their older consoles, like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), more than their Wii or other newer console.

I didn’t think so either, but when I read about a survey done both here in the UK and the US, it concluded that some people are actually using their old consoles more than their Wii console. I don’t know how true that is, but when I stopped and thought about it, I even play my older consoles a bit more than I originally thought.

But some people have apparently admitted to using their older consoles more and I guess there’s nothing wrong with that, it just seems pretty weird. I have to say that I play more than three times a week on my SNES with my daughter, although we have Wii and Wii Fit, which we use about twenty times a week.

Interestingly, when people in the survey were asked why they played older consoles more, over 50% gave an answer that might surprise you. It wasn’t because the older consoles were more of a challenge or because they were easier or for any other similar reason. No, it was sentimentality! Yes, that’s right, playing on the old console today brought back memories of fifteen years ago when you first played the game and thought it was the best thing on the planet.

I never know how much to believe about polls, but if all of that is true, I can understand it to some extent. A twenty-five year old today would have been only ten years old fifteen years ago; that’s a big difference and a lot of us are really sentimental about our childhoods.

For me, I like most of the older consoles and games, but give me the Nintendo Wii any day.
